The following
computer recommendations are for University of Tennessee
students NOT pursuing degrees in the College
of Architecture and Design, the College
of Business, or the College
of Engineering. If you are planning on majoring
in a field in one of these colleges, please see the
recommended systems on their respective pages.
The following specifications
are based on our experience at the computer store. Please
be advised that more specific requirements may exist for other
colleges that we are not aware of. We highly recommend
your contact the department you plan on majoring in and discuss
computer requirements.
The University of Tennessee campus has
seen many technological improvements over the last 5 years. One
of the largest has been the installation of a wireless computing
infrastructure. This network has allowed students and
faculty unprecedented freedom in regards to mobile computing. Students
can now "surf" the web in nearly all academic buildings
including the library. For this reason, we believe that
students who own laptop computers will have an advantage over
their classmates who do not.
We have also found that most students
use their computers to meet very basic needs. In most
cases, students rarely need more than Microsoft Office and
internet access. The following recommended computer specifications
should satisfy those needs.
