Sales Tax Holiday

Sales Tax Holiday and the University Center Computer Store

Hours

Our hours for the tax free holiday will be 9:00 - 5:00 on Friday August 1st. We will be closed on August 2nd and 3rd. If you preorder for tax-day, your items will be available for pickup on Monday August 4th.

To qualify for the tax exemption, the purchase MUST meet these criteria:

  • Items must be purchased by an individual for personal use.
  • The price of the computer cannot exceed $1,500 (before tax). All other items are taxed at regular state sales tax.
  • Customer must be registered at POS as a consumer or individual education customer and linked to the transaction so the customer’s name is on the receipt.

The following products are NOT eligible for the exemption:

  • Items purchased for a business or trade
  • Software that is not preinstalled in the computer
  • Digital cameras
  • Digital video cameras
  • Joysticks
  • Games Pads and related game devices
  • MP3 Players (including the iPod)
  • Scanners
  • Printers and printer ink
  • Mouse
  • Monitor
  • Keyboard

The transaction does NOT qualify for the exemption if:

  • The CPU costs more than $1,500 before tax.
  • The item is purchased for use in a trade or business. This exemption only applies to sales to individuals who will be using the item for personal use.
  • Cameras, bags and similar items do not qualify.
  • School computer supplies do not qualify. School computer supplies include blank CD media, blank DVD media, printers, printer ink, and computer bags.

Please also note the following:

While the sales tax holiday is in progress, all other exemptions remain in effect using the standard exemption process.
There will be no rainchecks. Items must be purchased during the tax holiday period.

Preorders

  • We will take preorders until July 29th 3:00 pm for UT Knoxville or July 21st 3:00 pm for non-Knoxville UT Campuses. For payroll deductions, see the information below.
  • Please visit the store in the University Center to fill out the appropriate forms and give payment information. For non-Knoxville UT Campuses, instructions and forms can be found under the Personal Orders link.
  • If your credit card doesn't go through we will make one attempt to reach you via phone or email but after that we will not be able to process your order. Please provide a legible email address that you will check between 2 and 4 PM on Friday August 1st (If something goes wrong we will email that address).
  • All checks should be payable to UT Bookstore and should be dated August 1st.
  • Friday will be reserved for in-store customers.
  • Custom orders are not returnable under any condition.
  • All stock preorder items will be available for pickup after Monday August 4th, or the items can be held here until school starts. Custom machines may take longer to arrive.

Faculty/Staff Payroll Deduction

  • Due to the expected congestion of our store on August 1st all forms and the down payment must be completed by Wednesday July 29th at 3:00 pm .
  • There will be no payroll deductions processed on August 1st.
  • For our distance payroll customers please keep in mind that the payroll process can easily take two weeks before we have all of the signed forms required to process a payroll deduction. This means that if you want us to do a payroll deduction on a computer for tax free day the process should be started no later than July 7th at 3:00 pm and completed by July 21st.
